A Good Snack for Kids

Trying to help your kids lose weight, but aren’t sure how? Try these healthy snacks to break your junk food addict of his or her bad habits.

Start serving fresh fruit at least once a day. Bring home new fruit and have fruit taste testing events where your kids try a few different types of fruit and vote on which one they like best. Offer both new and unusual fruits alongside the common options.

Get an air popcorn popper and show your kids how much fun it is to pop and eat, even without the butter. Spritz the popcorn with water and the sprinkle with salt. To satisfy a sweet tooth, toss popcorn with a small amount of reduced-calorie maple syrup–it’ll taste liek caramel corn.

Get a bag of those pretzel thins and top with slivers of cheese. Try using a strong-flavored cheese so you won’t need much to flavor the pretzels.

Cook up some hard boiled eggs. Kids love to peel the eggs, and the protein will keep them full for a long time. Most kids like them with paprika, salt, and pepper.

Get silly with your kids and make ants on a log. Cut up celery sticks, smear a small amount of peanut butter on them, and dot them with raisins or a scant number of miniature chocolate chips.

Offer plates of veggetables with salad dressing on the side. You can let older kids carve the vegetables into sculptures before eating them.

Try seasoned, cooked shrimp. Just pour some cajun seasoning into a pot with some hot water and boil the shrimp until done; it’s a perfectly delicious high protein snack.

Cold cut roll ups. Buy lean ham or turkey, and roll it up with thin slices of cheese and secure with toothpicks so it looks special.

Fruit smoothies. Combine frozen raspberries or strawberries with low calorie fruit juice and blend. Add yogurt for those who like it creamy.

Introduce your kids to Greek yogurt. Greek yogurt contains two times the amount of protein as regular yogurt. You can find plenty of flavors; even chocolate!

If you set the example with your healthy eating habits, your children will make the transition more easily. For more suggestions, check out a healthy eating cookbook.
